Use Case: Online Monitoring of Rail Track Faults

Squeaking and shaking streetcars? No, thanks!

For the automatic, continuous localization of rail defects, we have developed a measuring system with Rheinbahn AG that measures the vibrations at the bogie axles of the streetcars. An on-board measuring box links the vibration data with GPS position data and transmits it via wifi when the vehicle is in the maintenance hall. To prevent a flood of data, we rely on data reduction through edge computing. The knowledge gained can be used to focus maintenance activities and reduce noise and stress on the vehicle for residents.

All information about this Use Case and further interesting Use Cases can be found here: https://i4m-tech.de/en/use-cases.html

Many thanks for the successful cooperation to the Rheinbahn AG and especially to Jörg Klaeden, Peter Ahrens and Matthias Kienert.
We are looking forward to the further development of the measurement system within the research project “Detection of track faults in streetcar networks using onboard data with regard to immission maps in European cities – OnboardEU”. We are working on this together with our project partners Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. and AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH and are supported by local transport companies such as Rheinbahn AG.
